From the untamed literary hinterlands of the Zine Kingdom strides forth a reading, indomitable of will and steely of purpose. A reading, hewn from the soft rock of the Bay, to celebrate the mutants and the misfits, the poets and pretenders that make, sell, share and steal zines.

We’ll open it up for anyone who wants to share from a zine they’ve created or a favorite zine from our gigantic zine library. Plus, we’re making a themed zine during the event! Bring your stories, drawings, or ideas and help us create a zine on the spot! Gaze at artwork in the gallery, learn about volunteer opportunities, buy zines, or just make new friends. It’s Tuesday, so we must rage!

6:30 – 7:30 Social Hour & Make a Zine
7:45 Open mic
8:15 Readings from our featured creators & musicians

Kelly-Dessaint-Bio-PhotoThis month’s featured creator: Kelly Dessaint, Piltdownlad

Kelly Dessaint is an LA native currently exiled in Oakland. He put out his first zine when he was 26, convinced that if he turned 27 and wasn’t creating full-time, life would be meaningless. Over the past fifteen years, he’s come full circle: from releasing zines to publishing books to playing music to making zines again. Since 2010, he’s been putting out the personal narrative zine “Piltdownlad.” He is also a columnist for the San Francisco Examiner and the author of the novel A Masque of Infamy and the forthcoming memoir No Fun: How Punk Rock Saved My Life.

“Kelly Dessaint twists the horror of growing up in a highly dysfunctional American family into a hilarious tale of survival.” – Lydia Lunch
